Recherche

Infectious diseases and microbiology

This research group has three physicians who specialize in medical microbiology and infectious diseases and are based at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont: Dr. Christian Lavallée, Dr. Annie-Claude Labbé and Dr. Simon Frédéric Dufresne.

These three members are affiliated with the Department of Specialized Medicine at the CIUSSS de l'Est-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the CHUM (Optilab CHUM cluster), and the Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal.

Expertise

Our fields of expertise are complementary and collectively include:

  • antibacterial resistance
  • antifungal resistance
  • molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases
  • hospital epidemiology
  • sexually transmitted infections
  • eye infections
  • infections in immunocompromised hosts (associated with cancer and transplantation), including invasive fungal infections

Research activities

Our research activities cover:

  • the laboratory (antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and detection, development and optimization of diagnostic methods)

  • clinical epidemiology (cohort and case-control studies with determination of incidence/prevalence and risk analyses)

  • clinical trials involving various antimicrobial agents (letermovir, rezafungin, voriconazole, posaconazole, fidaxomicin)

Since April 2020, our group has led or collaborated on many research projects relating to SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.
