Renouvelle chaire Sapieha et Mallette

The Centre de recherche de l’Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont is pleased to announce the renewal of the research chairs of  Dr. Mike Sapieha, for the Canada Research Chair in Cell Biology of the Retina, and of Dr. Frédérick A. Mallette, for the Canada Research Chair in Epigenetics of Aging and Cancer.

Mike Sapieha's team is working to understand the natural aging mechanisms of the eye and the associated inflammatory processes. Their ultimate goal is to identify molecular signatures that can discriminate healthy cells from diseased cells and, therefore, to develop targeted treatments to counter the main causes of blindness such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

The research team led by Frédérick A. Mallette is interested in the molecular mechanisms responsible for senescence, a cellular response involved in aging and cancer. His group therefore offers new innovative approaches to slow the development of age-related pathologies and to treat cancer.

The collaboration between these two research chairs has also made it possible to highlight the role of cell senescence in retinopathy, then led to the development of a promising new drug to treat diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects approximately 750,000 Canadians and which is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults.

The Centre de recherche de l’Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont congratulates the two researchers on the renewal of their respective research chairs and wishes them every success in their pursuit of their work.
