Hélène Boisjoly

An ophthalmologist and physician from the Cornea Department at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Université de Montréal, Dr. Hélène Boisjoly received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) in 2019.


An exceptional career

Dr. Hélène Boisjoly is an MD who specializes in ophthalmology. She did a cornea subspecialty at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Harvard). She then received her Master of Public Health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health (Johns Hopkins). A National Researcher with the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé and Scientific Director of the Vision Health Research Network, Ms. Boisjoly has interests that include the immunology of corneal transplantation and rejection risk factors, viral diseases such as ocular herpes, wound healing, and the visual and functional outcomes of patients with chronic eye disease and patients who have had cataract and cornea operations. At Université de Montréal, Dr. Boisjoly has created a number of funds dedicated to research and teaching. She has trained a large number of residents and fellows throughout her career.

In addition to her long-standing service as head of the departments of ophthalmology at Université de Montréal and Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont, Hélène Boisjoly is involved in the university’s governance and internal affairs. She is one of the architects of the new PhD program in vision sciences. She is a member of several boards of directors. Since 2011, she has served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and is the first woman in the history of Quebec's medical faculties to hold this position. She was named a member of the Order of Canada in December 2018.
