At the 75th Acfas Gala held on November 14, 2019, Acfas awarded doctor and researcher Sylvain Chemtob from Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont the Prix Léo-Pariseau for biological sciences and health sciences. The winner has stood out during his career through his work on macular degeneration.

A world leader

A physician and researcher, Dr. Chemtob is also recognized as a global leader in retinal disease in premature infants, a disease that is the leading cause of child blindness in developed countries. He turned both theory and practice on its head in this field, as he has done in others. Thanks to his laboratory’s clinical research, well-established basic scientific concepts have been reassessed and ingrained clinical practices have been changed. His research along with the commercialization of his discoveries have also opened up new potential applications, for example, during labour and delivery, when screening tools for newborns are vital.
